The Metal Asylum Talks To….The Behaviour

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

I surmised The Behaviour many years ago when I was kicking around ideas for names that would best represent the sound and vision for what I wanted to do with this solo project. It is an open-ended enough concept that almost any meaning could be drawn from, but for me personally, it is a way to convey reflecting on the world around me, and myself, in the music I create. During these last several years, I underwent some major life changes while experiencing some very traumatic, life-altering, and sobering experiences. Once my perspectives and mindset started to clear and become more focused, I began writing proficiently, solidly for a couple of years. In that time, the mold began to take shape, having a natural progression that led to finally recording the album last year, and bringing it to where it is today. Up to the current moment, it is just myself who has handled every aspect of this. At some point there may very well be a drafting of potential members to help bring this to a live setting, but it will be a very rigorous vetting process. It must be ensured that anyone brought into this orbit is proficient, productive, professional, competent, mature, and sober. I have no time or patience for anything otherwise.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

I created this while living in Colorado, and spending time in the Midwest. Many of my closest relatives and friends are there, which is how it came to be recorded with the assistance of Scott Mackey, a very talented producer and mixing engineer who tremendously helped bring it to fruition. As well as getting Mike Nolte at Eureka Mastering to master it. I now reside in New England.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

The list is endless. For the sake of helping to understand the The Behaviour’s sound and style, I will mention Jeff Buckley, Soundgarden, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, my bloody valentine, Slint, Swervedriver, Failure, Killing Joke, Leonard Cohen, Sisters of Mercy, Swans. I love their huge, vast, textured, open sounds; some being harsher and some being more majestic than others. Chris Cornell, Buckley, Cohen, Bowie – their lyrical approaches all vary greatly, but are undeniable in the way they deliver them. Each is unique in their own way, but all are eloquent and certainly influential in my style of writing and sound. Each artist listed has very admirable and varying songwriting styles, and I take something from all of them combined, just as a foundational layer. One never wants to emulate but be their own thing, and I hope to achieve this no less.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Since I was a young boy, I was brought up in a very musical environment, as my father was a musician. I learned to play the drums as I learned to walk, being present at his rehearsals and watching his drummers like a hawk. Though I excelled academically and have always found interests in other areas such as science, mathematics, literature, philosophy, etc, music has always been a constant. My first professional music gig was actually being hired as my father’s band’s drummer when I was 15, and that taught me so much about the weaving interpersonal dynamics of playing with others. Of course I always had my own bands going on as well, and by the time I was halfway through college, and doing exceedingly well, I was presented with an opportunity to dive head first into pursuing this avenue. At the time, it was either give one-third of myself to academia, another to attaining reliable income, and the other to pursuing a career in music. I gave all to the latter, and never looked back. I went on to some amazing things with very remarkable artists that I will always be proud of. Now I am here, better, healthier, more focused, and invigorated more than ever as a solo artist.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

“Dance Me to the End of Love” by Leonard Cohen, “Red Eyes and Tears” by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, “Like Suicide” by Soundgarden, “Stuck on You” by Failure, “Grace” by Jeff Buckley, “Glenn” by Slint, “The Egg” by Shiner, “Resurrection Song” by Mark Lanegan, “Love of LIfe” by Swans, “Song with No Name’ by Dax Riggs, “Shelter Song” by Temples, “Be All Things” by Chelsea Wolfe, “Only Shallow” by my bloody valentine

Do you sing in the shower?

Occasionally, depending on my mood.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

The first 2 singles are currently out, from the album A Sin Dance which is out on September 15th. Following that, there will be more recording and singles into next year, with occasional shows throughout that time with promotional campaigns as well

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Yes, as explained above.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Red Rocks in Colorado

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Pink Floyd’s Animals or Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

I’m not sure I feel guilty about any, but perhaps Kiss’ Unmasked

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, Failure, Autolux, Nick Cave, Swans, my bloody valentine, Diamanda Galas, Einsturzende Neubauten

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Deep Purple’s Machine Head, and yes I do

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

I hope that any of the artists I have mentioned as influences you are curious to discover for your own self, and that leads you to a greater and deeper appreciation of independent and/or underground artists such as myself, and unique, left-field or niche music/artists that deserve appreciation and respect as much as those that are more popular

The Metal Asylum Talks To…Tilburg

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

The band was actually started back in 2009 under the name of KinderVoss.  I started the working on the songs putting together a concept album “Tales of the Spanish Kings” ala 70s prog rock. The original line up was set, but we kept having scheduling conflicts and the album was shelved for the time being.  In early 2022, I met Timo Janse in the Netherlands, and we began putting the album back together (seeing who could out solo the other one).

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

No, there’s currently two of us. I’m from the US but now in Mexico.  Timo the guitarist is in the Netherlands.  I’ve always tried to use musicians from around the world.  I think my first band “Whispers of the Dragon” represented members from Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

Any one from progressive rock era including Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, and Genesis, but the two most influencial were Rick Wakeman (YES) and Keith Emerson (ELP).

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

No I really loved to play the keyboard and write songs but never wanted to turn it into a career.  Was never someone who liked uncertainty that the music business would bring.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Currently alot of independent musicians (we end up in these playlists together).  We kind of have this invisible bond of battling for attention at the same time supporting each other.

Do you sing in the shower?

No, my wife won’t let me.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

We have two maybe three EPs (four songs each) being released in the next month or so.  The first one is almost done and we have three of the four songs for the second EP already recorded.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Same as above.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Wacken in Germany, really the coolest vibe I’ve ever seen.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Rare Earth’s live album way back in the early 70s. There one of the greatest jam bands (I think). Twenty three minutes of “Get Ready” always puts me in a good mood. I once got the pleasure of seeing them in a small casino stage setup, it was incredible the whole casino stopped to listen.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Love 60/70s pop like the Partridge Family, Turtles and the Monkees.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Depeche Mode, Nightwish, Yes, and Metallica (with orchestra). A nice blend of styles.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Long time ago, not sure, but it had to be a live album.  For the most part I only wanted to here live versions (Uriah Heep, Yes, Woodstock, Rare Earth, Black Oak Arkansas, and Genesis, the list is long.  Love the crowd involvment.  Sadley I no longer own any albums.  I do miss them.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

I read something yesterday that was pretty cool. It said that fans don’t think they can reach out and say they listened to your music and to let you know what they thought about it. Musicans can’t get enough feedback, that’s what we crave.

Finally, let us know all your social media sites so your fans, old and new, can find and follow/like you!

We’re a bit shy of the social media scene and have stayed away from it until recently.  Thus we’re currently only on twitter at @tilburgprogrock so far.  We were on Instragram for a day but someone took over the account and did something bad because we were banned for a year.

The Metal Asylum Talks To…Comaniac

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Comaniac is a fusion word from “company” and “maniac” and describes our manic hunger for contemporary Thrash Metal. No one will ever be able to copy the 1980s classics so why even trying?
We are currently releasing our fourth studio album since the formation in 2012. After countless tours in Europe with bands such as “Metal Church”, “Overkill” and “Vektor” we played our own Japan Tour in 2018. Our most famous member is drummer “Stef” who also used to play for “Triptykon” a few years ago.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

We are from the same area and were thrashing clubs in our teenage years way before we were together in the band. I guess we are the core of that time that is still living for the music with full passion.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

Besides all the legendary Thrash Metal bands we are highly influenced by progressive music from Opeth, Symphony X, Nevermore or Leprous just to name a few. We have huge respect towards bands who created a unique direction within a genre like Opeth did with Death Metal.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

It was the decision from the first minute to dedicate our lives to music and hasn’t changed since then. We are trying to do the best music we can but we’re still the same plebs struggling with our own tunes every day.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

I just discovered the Austalian band “In Malice’s Wake” which I really enjoy at the moment. I am also looking forward to hearing the new “Soen” album which was released a few weeks ago. Still didn’t find the time to really listen to it.

Do you sing in the shower?

Of course, but only in head voice trying to do harmonies to “The Odyssey” by “Symphony X”

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

We are trying to tell as many people about our newest album “None For All” out October 13, 2023. Live concerts will play a big part within this plan for sure.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

The full length album “None For All” will be out on October 13, 2023 and available on CD and vinyl. Until then we are dropping single releases so we definitely recommend everyone to follow our socials and look out for our Spotify and YouTube channel.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

We played at “Zeche” Bochum in 2017 with which is a legendary location in Germany supporting “Overkill”. We had to play right at the minute the doors opened which was rough because there weren’t too many people in the crowd. That was just a poor organisation in general and I would love to go back there and play a proper show because the club is really cool.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

I could name my favourite album from every favourite band, but in general? No way! I can say though that the album “…And Justice For All” was probably the one that influenced me the most in my teenage years.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

I really enjoy listening to the “Born To Die” album by “Lana Del Rey” from time to time.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Definitely “At The Gates” and “Coroner”, everything else would be extra.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

I remember buying the albums “Garage Inc.” by Metallica and an “Apocalyptica” album as my first albums. I was listening to “Mutter” by “Rammstein” and “Meteora” by “Linkin Park” already at that time but had to borrow them from my older brother.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Always ask yourself: “what can I do for my team?”

The Metal Asylum Talks To…. Ersin Kara, Guitarist for Old Ruins

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Well, we all are long time Friends, Olli (Bass) and Christian (Guitar and Vocals) are Brothers.

They played with Alex(Drums) in another Band called Firestorm (Powermetal), but after a while it got put on hold and Alex and Christian wanted to do something different.

So they started a little Project, just for them to jam. Out of those jams a more darker sound came about and they started to jam more darker stuff and for the lyrics, Christian wanted to do something different and took inspiration from Diablo 2 (Blizzards RPG), instead from Tolkien or Lovecraft.

At the time I was playing Bass (and after that Guitar) in my Band Mortals’ Path.

One evening I was at Alex’s House and he put on a Song and challenged me to guess, who this was and when he told me I immediately wanted to join.

On that Night Alex was talking about the Sword of Tyrael (Eldruin), for the Name, and the German name sounded so much like Old Ruins (translated into German: Alte Ruinen), I was asking, why he was talking about Old Ruins, then it clicked and thats where the name comes from.

So we jammed some more as a Group and wrote Songs, just for us and decided to put out an EP.

The resonance was so good that we did an Album out of it.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Yes, we are all from Gelsenkirchen Germany,  and actually we also live at a 5 Minute walking distance from each other.

And like I said, we are long time Friends and ended up joining together.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

Immortal, I(Solo Project of Abbath) and Demonaz(Soloproject of Demonaz) are the primary inspirations we have for this Band, but we have many many more influences we try to put together organically and out comes Old Ruins.

My personal favourite band is Death(Florida) and im a huge Nerd for that Band (saw Left to Die live and got to hug Rick and Terry and got my Backpatch signed ^^).

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

It is everybodys dream to play in a Band and make music, If you are passionate about it enough, I think.

Also, music and metal is our passion, we do this besides our actual jobs, because we love to do it. It is and never will be for a Paycheck with us.

If and when, we could live off of this or lessen our Work to do this more, than it is a big Bonus, but thats not the goal for us.

We just love to Play music.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Dissection – Storm of the Lightsbane

She Past Away – Belidi Gece (turkish Dark Wave)

Gatecreeper – An Unexpected Reality

Wilt – Into Nothingness

Death – Symbolic

Do you sing in the shower?

Nope, I dont like to sing in the shower, not that anything is wrong with that, I just dont.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

This Year we are trying to get some shows together, to keep up the momentum of our Albumrelease.

And next year it is much the same, but trying to write new Songs also.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

We are working on Riffs and Songs constantly and try to fit them together, but currently we dont have anything ready for a release sadly.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

For us all, it would be a Dream to play the Rockhard Festival here in Germany, in our Home Town.

Because we grew up with that Festival and try to attend every Year, because its local and many Bands, that influenced us, also played it.

For me personally also the PartySan Festival, because it is the best Extreme Metal festival we have in Germany and everytime it is like a family gathering.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Is it okay if I just say Death ? I have a favourite, which is Symbolic, but I love all the Albums 😀

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

I wouldnt say guilty pleasure, but as a Metal musician, maybe no one would guess, that I love Old School Hip Hop.

As a turkish Migrants kid, it was what I grew up with (and turkish 70’s Rock) and still listen to heavily.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

I’m guessing I can do Dead or Alive doesn’t matter ?
Of course Death as a Headliner, but for this show maybe with their first three Albums.

Entombed with its old Line up.

Bathory, Dissection and Bolt Thrower with Karl Willets on Vocals.

Not in that order, but that would be my Dream show.

Of course I have more Bands i would like to see, but then it would be a seven Day Festival at the minimum.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Amon Amarth – Fate of Norns

I still have it and Christian is actually responsible for me getting into Metal more as I was and it was with Amon Amarth that he got me (hahahaha).

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Stay safe, stay healthy and stay a while and listen ;).

The Metal Asylum Talks To…Roses Are Dead 🌹☠️

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

For sure! The band name is something we all agreed on, but thought of by guitarist Xander. Originally, he was thinking, “Roses”, but it seemed more difficult to look us up that way. Plus, this way our acronym is R.A.D. that’s pretty rad.

A bit about each member:

Xander: Started the band, he has been playing guitar with Stevo, our other guitarist for a long time.

Stevo: other guitarist, childhood buddies with Xan, they both share lead guitar parts for songs they write.

Dakota: Our brother that grew up in Kalispell, that we met once everyone relocated to Boise ID slaps da Bass and is a fellow elder emo.

Weston: Smacks the pots and pans for the band. Currently actually resides in Utah, but drives this way for shows in the area. He’s our tracks/computer expert as well

Twitchy: I run the vocals for the band, a blend of harsh and clean singing. I write lyrics with Xan depending on what song. We have a good thing going where he can write a full song when I burn out, haha. In a way, we are all like family now. We’ve been doing this since 2017 and I can’t really see us not hanging out and making tunes.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

We all got together as friends to make music really. Most of us are Idaho Potatocore kids. Xan and Weston started jamming together first and filled out the rest of the members later.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

I love Motionless In White a lot. So that inspires me to do clean/harsh vocals. I think Chris Motionless is a crazy good front man. They also just seem like nice guys. I’m also really into Bad Omens and Linkin Park. Just awesome vocalists.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

I wanted to get through school and be an Engineer or something, but I don’t have the drive to get through school, haha. So I’m kinda using music as my escape from that 9-5. We all work day jobs for sure, but we would love to tour someday playing music for people.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Scoring the end of the world- Motionless in White

Midnights-Taylor Swift I am a big swifty honestly thanks to my partner haha.

Fearless (Taylor’s Version, clearly)

I also listen to a LOT of Queen.

Do you sing in the shower?

I am more of a car singer. Whenever I’m trying to get somewhere, I’m probably working on vocals. I feel too weird singing in the shower, haha. I live in an apartment and don’t want anyone hearing.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Yes! We are working on more singles. Personally, I want to have 3 songs done by the end of the year. But honestly, we just want to have fun with people jamming shows.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

We have a couple in the chamber, but are still working out the finals.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

I don’t really care where, as long as the crowd is having fun. If it’s 3 people or 1000, as long as people are having a good time, that’s the venue I want.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

I really like Lover by Taylor Swift. It’s the album that made me a swifty. I can’t exactly pin down why, it’s just really relaxing.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Funny enough, a lot of young gravy. It’s not my typical type of music, but it’s all so catchy and fun.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Hmmm, I recently went to eras tour, I feel like Taylor Swift would have to be there. Foo Fighters, and Motionless in White. MIW won’t fit the vibe, but the concert is for me and I’m selfish hahaha.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

So my first albums were bought together. Morning View by Incubus, Collective Soul self titled, Nevermind and In Utero by Nirvana. I still have them! Nirvana got me into grunge type vocals and Incubus got me heavily into clean smooth vocals.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

I don’t feel like we have a lot of fans, but I love the ones we do. They make it worth it, hopefully they enjoy our goofy energy and know how much they keep us going. We aren’t big and maybe we never will be, but the friends and fans we have made are all awesome.

The Metal Asylum Talks To… Moonlight Lily

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

Vlad (the drummer) – I was born in Belarus. Have been living in Brooklyn, NY since January 2019. District Manager at a pet food company. Have been into drumming since 2006. My inspiration – Christoph Doom Schneider (Rammstein). Favourite music styles – industrial, gothic rock, electro pop, space ambient, cyber punk.

Iva (voice/words/synths) – Ed (bassist/guitarist) and I met at work. We often spoke about music and listened to it together. I had another project going on at a time and we decided to work on it together. Soon after that the pandemic hit so we had to stop going to the studio, as everyone else I imagine. It was quite a challenging time. While trying to adjust to the new reality, the fear, the pressure, the lockdowns, the isolation, we forced each other to continue to create. We put together mini home studios. We would write separately and exchange tracks over the internet, starting with the arrangement that Ed made, and then adding to it. We did all the writing and recording ourselves, and then all art, videos, publishing, and so on. Vlad found us some time in 2021. He had a lot of patience waiting for us to be ready for a drummer. I am glad he waited. We definitely clicked and the chemistry between all of us is fantastic.

The band name, well, we wanted something that would “feel” like our music. Something dark, raw, energetic, and rebellious, but also beautiful and sensual, otherworldly, and mysterious, and maybe coloured blue. So, we mixed and matched, and mixed and matched, and came up with “Moonlight Lily”

I was born in Serbia, living in the States for about 16 years. I had my first band when I was 16. The band was called “Park Avenue”. We played in my bedroom, with amps and drums and all. The neighbours didn’t put up with it for too long, so we had to relocate  Today I manage IT platform and related projects for a Spanish bank in the Fraud Risk space. I also have a background in visual arts.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Vlad – I found Moonlight Lilly on Bandmix.com in 2021

Iva – I guess I’ve already answered how we got together. Ed and I live relatively near, Vlad is about an hour away.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

Ed – My favourite bands are from the realm of classic metal. Iconic names like Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Helloween hold a special place in my heart. The rumbling riffs and soaring vocals of Iron Maiden have always resonated with me, and so have Megadeth’s intricate compositions. Helloween’s high-energy performances and melodic prowess are nothing short of awe-inspiring. These bands have not only shaped my musical taste but also served as a wellspring of inspiration for my own musical endeavours.

Vlad – I love many things, from Rammstein (industrial) to DreamState Logic (space). There is no spec influence, just try to find the best rhythm for a particular song

Iva – I have a very long list, but some of my all-time favourites are: Rammstein, Breaking Benjamin, Korn, Lacuna Coil, Moonspell, HIM, Poets of the Fall. I also like a lot Epica and Within Temptation…as of recently Bad Omens, Butcher Babies and Jinjer. I imagine all of them have influenced me, one way or another.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Ed – I’ve been playing in various bands since I was a kid, predominantly cover bands, but I’ve always been drawn to creating my own music.

Vlad – Always wanted to be a part of a band

Iva – I’ve always wanted to be in a band. I wanted a few other things too

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

ED – My current playlist features a diverse selection of music bands. Albums like Avenged Sevenfold’s ‘The Stage’ and Gojira’s ‘Magma’. I like their intense energy.

Iva – “The Death of Peace of Mind” album by Bad Omens, “Kostolom” album by Slaughter to Prevail, “Lost on You” album by LP. In my defence, these are not on the same playlist 😀

Do you sing in the shower?

Iva – Rarely but yes

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Iva, Ed – We are recording three new songs to release early next year. We will also try to play out as much as possible.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Iva – Yes, we will release two more songs this year.

Ed – The band is pretty excited to share this new music with everyone.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

ED – I often watch concerts from Wacken Festival. I would absolutely love to see the band perform at this incredible event someday. Let’s hope it happens!

Iva – I don’t have a venue preference, though I definitely wouldn’t mind Wacken 😀 Would be great to play Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Europe, Japan… And I can keep going

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

ED – Yes, my favorite albums are the ‘Keepers’ Albums from Helloween. The powerful riffs and vocals from those two albums are mind-blowing for me. The way the bass sounds and the guitar, absolutely phenomenal.

Iva – I have more than one favourite album

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Iva – I’ve never felt guilty listening to any music, so no.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Iva – Ugh, that’s a hard one. You didn’t specify how many bands I can add so I’ll go with Rammstein, Epica, Moonspell, Lacuna Coil, Korn, Breaking Benjamin, Bad Omens and Butcher Babies.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Iva – Metallica’s vinyl “And Justice For All”.

Vlad – I think it was Mutter by Rammstein. I don’t remember, perhaps I have it in my hometown.

ED – The first album that I bought was ‘No Prayer for the Dying’. It was actually a cassette at that time, and I absolutely loved that album. ‘Holy Smoke’ and ‘Bring Your Daughter… to the Slaughter’ are my favourites.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Vlad – Listen, enjoy and support!

Iva – If you stumble upon our music and happen to like it, do get in touch with us! We would love to meet the crowd that feels and understands what we are about. Definitely, look us up and get in touch!

We, at The Metal Asylum, would like to thank you for your time. Is there is anything further that you would like to add?

Thank you so much for spending this time with us. It was a pleasure. We will keep you posted on our new music.

The Metal Asylum Talks To…The Fair Attempts

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

“The Fair Attempts” is ultimately a reminder of me to step outside of the bounds of my comfort zone and adventure a bit. You see, for me the biggest step of the development as an artist was when I lifted my focus from making my music sound technically good, making sure the mix was great and according to all of these rules that the industry imposes on them, to focusing how they actually feel. Kind of like creating experiences for the listener. Experiences of adventure, mood and all that what ticks your brain to recreate a real space for where the music itself is happening. Music is like a multisensory experience deep in your head, and I think at best, it can tick some of the primordial nerves within that, like a language, can have us imagine in similar ways.
To me, it’s experiences and sense of adventure that merges with creativity. You got to take that step into the unknown while anchoring yourself to your roots with another. Like a union between that what is fundamental to your character and the pure joy of progressing forward with something that is new. And in the process of that lies humility. You humble yourself to step into the unknown, and you have to accept your potential failures. Even before you begin with it, the act itself implies that.
True creativity then lies in the elusive point between the two. This is the anchor point for “The Fair Attempts”. For I want to remind myself of where my focus should stay at all times. It’s to take you to an adventure and tell you a great story through it.
That’s how I first came to the name, but it has another layer of meaning that’s not just for me, but for all our listeners. Our music is full of themes of oppression, struggle, and perseverance. The meaning of “The Fair Attempts” for all of us is that when you’re living in a state of oppression and you make any fair attempt to fight back, you are persevering.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Well, we are a husband-and-wife project. How I met Starwing? Long story short, she flew all the way from Canada to Finland to start a new life, and I was into all things occult, and through this shared interest we eventually met and began our journey together. She and I actually met the first time in a dream, believe it or not. She and I make a cool couple, you know. I can say I’m so metal I’ve had inverted cross in my tongue from age 3, and she can say she’s so goth she is actually allergic to sunlight. That’s pretty funny actually.
Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?
NIN definitely defined my path to do industrial rock. I absolutely adored the energy. Likewise, many other bands from other genres have defined my approach to making music. See, I don’t try to sound like any of these bands, but rather create my own unique sound that translates through all of my expression. Just like NIN does. You know it’s NIN rather quick when you put on an album to play.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

I set my goals to be a musician and play in a band since I was 15. Before that, I didn’t really have any goals in life other than fool around and be a nuisance to my environment. For Starwing, she had ambition to be in a band, and she formed a band with some friends when she was only 14. The funny thing is they wrote a lot of lyrics but none of them knew how to play an instrument. She says they were like Bill and Ted. Later, she developed other plans until we were married.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

I’ve been playing Metric’s Formentera over and over again. Such a great album.

Do you sing in the shower?

I do the quiet parts in the shower. Medium ones I sing all around our home. Louder ones I rather do in the car while I’m driving. It’s a great place to train to sing and scream, and you get to multitask that way.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Yes. I’m always scheming something. We’ve been working on an EP for the past year and we’re getting ready to promote that, for one. We always make more music than we can release at one time, so there’s definitely more to come next year.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Oh yes! We are working hard to release a new EP. More on that later. I bet you guys would love it!

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Somewhere close to home so I can get back quick. I’m such a hermit, and I enjoy just being at home with our kitties.

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

10,000 Days by Tool. It’s just a perfect album in many ways. These guys are so talented it never gets old.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

Nah, I don’t feel guilty of listening to something I enjoy.

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

It’s hard to say really because I think you cannot make the greatest show on earth by simply spamming great bands on to the stage. It takes an entire town to make the greatest show happen, I think. Then you have to start entertaining a question “according to who?” It really depends. What a silly question really. I cannot answer that in true honesty.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

It must have been Irreligious by Moonspell. I have no idea where the CD is today. I was maybe 14 years, and my teen years were rather wild.

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

Thank you for all the love and support you’ve been giving through these years! It’s a joy every single time to chat with you.

We, at The Metal Asylum, would like to thank you for your time. Is there is anything further that you would like to add?

First, thank you for this opportunity to tell more about us and our projects. I want to add that all our songs have a universal message or meaning, but they also all relate to a future world we envision. Starwing is also writing a book series called “Machine Dreaming” about that world. Some songs are from the perspective of one or more characters, and sometimes that even influences the costumes I wear.

The Metal Asylum Talks To…Kivelak

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

The origin of the band name is top secret actually haha, I don’t think very many people are going to figure it out. The band started as your typical one man black metal project and now it’s a much more experimental two man project. We keep out identity secret, not really sure why anymore, it just started that way.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

Yes we are both from Denver, Colorado. We’ve been friends since we were kids. Now we live in different cities entirely (St. Louis and Philadelphia) and we make our music remotely.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

Wow we have so many influences because we are total music nerds but here’s a list of some of our favorite bands; Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Thrice, Clutch, Mastodon, Queens of the Stone Age, Between the Buried and Me, Opeth, The Melvins, Slayer, Darkthrone, Modest Mouse, The Flaming Lips, Deftones, Explosions in the Sky, Baroness, Nine Inch Nails, Primus, CKY, King Crimson, Tool

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Well we’ve been playing together since we were kids, now we are adults with grown up jobs haha, but I think we look forward to playing music more than most other things in life

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Right now, the last two Gojira albums, Quebec by Ween, some later Fugazi, and some early Mastodon

Do you sing in the shower?

Yep every time

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Right now we’re actually working more on an alternative/post-rock project, but we’ll probably put out some more black metal next year.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

We just released our new LP Fear and the Fire a couple weeks ago!

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Red rocks man, love that place

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

Probably Animals by Pink Floyd

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

The occasional Limp Bizkit haha

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

Honestly I can’t remember what my first one was but I still own most the CDs I bought as a teen

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

If we have any fans, haha, thanks for listen to our weird music

The Metal Asylum Talks To…King Ov Wyrms

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, the history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

The name is King Ov Wyrms is a reference to the slanderous title said in mockery towards Jesus Christ as a “king of worms, a king of nothing”.
King Ov Wyrms originally started back in 2015/16 with Michael “Oneirous” Sanchez and then Pain Patterns bassist Reymundo Romero as a more aggressive alternative to their current project. As the years passed the project dissolved to be just a solo studio project run by Oneirous solely for the release of the debut album “Lord Ov Thornes” in 2020. Now reforming with the addition of Ricky Williams on drums, King Ov Wyrms is rebirthing itself into a new direction with the upcoming album “The Womb Ov Borealis”.
Michael “Oneirous” Sanchez is a multi-instrumentalist whose background in classical music and jazz helped push his fluency in several forms of metal throughout his career. His first band Pain Patterns was a progressive death metal group that blended various forms of genres within its song structures. While still maintaining the core duties of running Pain Patterns, Oneirous toured as a session bassist for the power metal act Judicator later to be hired on as the Bassist and Lead Guitarist for the group for several years releasing two albums and signing to Prosthetic Records together before he was replaced by new members. After the departure from Judicator Oneirous rekindled King Ov Wyrms and has been spearheading it since its resurgence in 2020.
Ricky started playing music in high school not in the traditional sense like band orchestra but rather more local band acts. He joined his first real serious band in 2000 called Sanity In Death which released a self-titled album under Hammermill Records. Unfortunately, Sanity fell apart after the initial release but gave way to Ricky being able to pursue new projects one of which was Evasion a technical deathcore band. Evasion toured and released two albums with Ricky sporting the percussionist section before his departure in 2016. After his departure from Evasion, he joined Viking metal act Olden until they eventually split in 2023. Meanwhile as Olden was still active, Ricky was contacted a second time to join King Ov Wyrms for the sophomore release of The Womb Ov Borealis where he is currently.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

We are both from California (by birth) but respectfully we both consider ourselves to be Tucsonans. I myself being pretty much raised in Tucson my whole life feel this place is more of a home to me than anywhere else I could spend my time. I and Ricky met through the local metal scene in Tucson while I was working with Pain Patterns and he was drumming for the band Evasion whom we later became roommates with in a rehearsal studio and growing quite the brotherly comradery. Over time I was getting into audio engineering producing my own music for Pain Patterns and eventually ended up helping Evasion do pre-production for their work it gave me a chance to sit down and exclusively focus on Ricky’s drum performance which was extremely intimidating at the time but I knew he was by far one of the most talented musicians in Tucson. Later came around to getting ready to release Lord Ov Thornes in 2020 I reached out to Ricky to see if he could perform on the album and work his way into the group full time which unfortunately wasn’t possible with our conflicting schedules but fortunately we were able to work things out now for The Womb Ov Borealis. – Oneirous

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

I would have to say bands like Vader, Morbid Angel, Goatwhore, Belphegor, and Immolation were big influences on our playing styles throughout our individual careers which is what pulled us together to be able to perform the music that is featured in King. – Oneirous

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

I knew I always wanted to be a musician of sorts, ideally, I wanted to be a music instructor/teacher for public and college students which is where I started my degree plan. Over time I fell out of it to pursue my musical career as a performer which was looking up however I got tied into Audio Engineering and fell in love with the work, which is now where I would argue I spend most of my time as a musician. – Oneirous
I knew I always wanted to play in a band, I grew up in a family of music connoisseurs however I took it one step further and learned to play so I could perform in a band. Currently, aside from my music career, I am a former EMT and currently in school to become a respiratory therapist. – Ricky

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Currently, I’ve been listening to Saldorian Spell by Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, Helvegr by Tsjuder, Sacred Rites and Black Magick by Stormruler, The Suns of Perdition – Chapter 1 by Panzerfaust, and Birth, Dreams and Death by Speglas just to name a few things on repeat for myself lately – Oneirous
Currently on my playlist things are all over the place, we got stuff from super extreme death metal to outlaw country with everything in between haha I mostly listen to music on my motorcycle while out on drives so basically my playlist will just wander about. Some of my favorite bands are Goatwhore, Carnifex, The Acacia Strain, Dying Fetus, Black Dahlia, and Dimmu Borgir just to name a few. – Ricky

Do you sing in the shower?

Of course I do haha it’s got great acoustics and you would be surprised how many times you will come up with great lyrics there on the spot hahaha – Oneirous

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

I think we are gonna let the next album run its course a bit to see what we can try to improve the next time around similar to what we did between Lord Ov Thornes to The Womb Ov Borealis. Fortunately, this time around we already know that its just gonna be myself and Ricky working this project out from here so it won’t take nearly as long to make a turn around for album three. – Oneirous

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Yes, our first single off of the upcoming album The Womb Ov Borealis just released with a music video exclusively on Slam Worldwide. The song is called In Aeons We Spoke and is the opening track to the new album. It sets the whole feeling and ambience for the album pretty well which is why we decided that it would be the logical first impression of the album. – Oneirous

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

I never really heard about the venue until I saw Opeth recorded a live concert there, I believe it’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre which is a venue built into a mountainside if I’m correct. The stage itself is surrounded by rock and it just seems like such a magical place to unleash some insane black metal. – Oneirous

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

It’s really hard to pick just one favorite album for myself, there are so many perfect albums but one I always say is a hidden gem of albums that doesn’t have a single bad song (or rather less enjoyable) is Failure by Farsot. It’s more in the vein of avante-garde or experimental black metal but I can’t stress how phenomenal that album is as a whole, literal perfection from top to bottom. – Oneirous
A favorite album of mine that takes me back to understanding drums and helped me immensely was the album Miasma by Black Dahlia Murder. One of the things that stood out to me on that album was that they stated the drummer performed sloppy but it had this human element that really made the album feel relatable as a person who was trying to figure out where I was going. – Ricky

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

I wouldn’t say I have any guilty pleasure music tastes, most metalheads really do enjoy a wide variety of music even when they don’t look like it. I listen to a lot of Depeche Mode, Classical music, Bebop Jazz, 80s pop, I’m a huge prog rock fan, and the list goes on. – Oneirous
I listen to really anything from the 80s. One of the first bands I really got into was Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith. I grew up in a big city with top 40s on the radio all the time so I got into nu-metal and whatever kind of rock was popular on the radio in the 90s. – Ricky

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

If it’s the greatest show for myself I’d be picking a lot of my favorite artists so I’d be biased and put Sulphur Aeon, Ihsahn, Opeth, Wolves in The Throneroom, 1349, and Dark Fortress. My list could go on forever if you let me haha – Oneirous
For me, I would put us on there haha because who doesn’t want to play with their heroes?! Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus because I love their live shows, Dimmu Borgir and Cattle Decapitation because they just bring out a great performance all the time as well.

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

It wasn’t the very first album I bought but I vividly remember it being the first real entry into Death Metal and it changed me. I saved up a bunch of lunch money from school and I bought a random cd in the used bargain bins at Zia Records. I grabbed the CD just because of how cool the artwork was and when I first listened to it I was changed. The album was Gateways To Annihilation by Morbid Angel. I still have that album to this day and its just such an amazing album and part of my childhood. – Oneirous
For me it was Aerosmith’s Pump album and Get A Grip. – Ricky

As your fans will be reading this, is there any message you would like to send out to them?

I would personally like to thank everyone who has patiently waited for this next album to come out, it’s been very quiet on our end but from here on out we are gonna be pushing very hard with our career. Also a big thank you to the great response towards our release of In Aeons We Spoke, it’s been huge compared to anything I’ve personally done and I’m eternally grateful. – Oneirous

Finally, let us know all your social media sites so your fans, old and new, can find and follow/like you!

Thank you guys for having us! And mark your calendars, the new Album “The Womb Ov Borealis” will be out October 6th 2023, Cheers! – Oneirous
